What’s the difference between a Cuban Link and a Curb Chain?

One of the most common questions we receive about chains is "What's the difference between a Cuban Link and a Curb Chain? Buying a new chain can be an exciting journey, especially with how many options there are on the market today. Today, we’re going to be exploring two very popular chain types and explaining some of the similarities and differences between them. Our chains of choice are the Miami cuban link chain and the curb chain. Although these two are very similar, especially in the fact that they are both interlocking chains, they aren’t exactly the same.

Stylistic Differences

Let’s start by looking at the stylistic differences between the chain. If you look closely at the picture above, you’ll notice that the curb chain (on the left) is thinner and a little flatter than the cuban link chain (on the right). This is because the curb chain generally uses thinner material to form the links and the links aren’t as closely bound together. On the other hand, the cuban links are much thicker, more tightly bound together, and filed flat on two sides. This allows the cuban link to rise out and really pop from your outfit, while still laying close to your chest.

One think you want to make sure you take time to think about, is the weight of the chain you’re purchasing. After all, you’re going to want to be comfortable wearing it. When it comes to how much each of these chains weigh, the curb chain will always weigh less than its cuban link counterpart due to the closeless of the individual links making up the chain. You can see the difference in the picture above by how much more of the person’s hand is visible through the center of the link on the curb chain vs. the cuban link.

Around the Neck Feel

Another major difference between the two chains is the way that they tend to lay around the wearer’s neck. Curb chains are more subtle and flexible, which means that as you walk down the street or get in and out of a car the chain will likely shift and reflect light. This movement makes the chain really sparkle and attract that classic curb chain attention. On the flip side, a true miami cuban link chain is much sturdier thanks to the tightly bound links with flattened sides. The cuban may not offer as much “glimmer” but it does have a very commanding presence. Especially when purchased in heavier weights.
