The Basics of Different Types of Earrings

Whether you’re the type of person to enjoy a simple stud earring or an elegant dangle earring, these pieces of jewelry are some of the most common aesthetic additions to any outfit. Earrings have been around for hundreds of years and have evolved a lot over time. At JB Jewelers we’re committed to making sure that you’re informed on your jewelry purchases, so today we will be exploring the basics of different types of earrings.

Stud Earrings

Stud earrings are some of the most recognizable and widely worn types of earrings across genders and styles. They sit tightly on the front side of the earlobe without drooping downwards or climbing up. They can be cut in a multitude of ways (if they’re diamond studs) and look great with pretty much any combination of outfits. Diamond studs are a fan favorite, and can be found in plenty of jewelry boxes around valentines day and Christmas.

Cluster Earrings

Cluster earrings, much like stud earrings, sit directly on top of the earlobe and fit tightly. The main difference is that instead of being a single “stud,” they are a cluster of smaller stones grouped together. These decorative earrings can also be crafted to have a slight drop.

Dangle Earrings

Dangle earrings are known for exactly what their name implies, dangling. Hanging below the earlobe, these earrings typically have a more intricate design and experience movement to them. These types of earrings are the perfect addition to a fancy outfit for a night out, or a gala. Many times, these types of earrings can be passed down for generations.

Hoop Earrings

Much like dangle earrings, the hoop earring is self-explanatory. These earrings have an earring post on the front and loop around towards the backside of the ear. Contrary to popular belief, hoop earrings are not only circles, they can come in a variety of different designs including squares and ovals as well.

Chandelier Earrings

Chandelier earrings are technically a subtype of the dangle earring, but with a little more pizzaz. These earrings, similar to a chandelier, typically are made of an ornate crystal and droop well below the ear. These are generally looked at as the most elegant type of earrings.

Jacket Earrings

If you’re looking to be unique, look no further than the Jacket earrings. These earrings are a sort of “reverse stud” with the latch resting on the front part of the earlobe, while the stone rests on the back of the ear causing a drooping effect from behind the ear.
